Cricket South Africa have left out Jacques Kallis from the 15-man squad for the England ODI series so that the senior batsman can rest for the World T20 Championships scheduled to start in Sri Lanka in September.
Kallis, who scored an unbeaten 182 in the first Test against England, has been replaced in the ODI squad by new cap Dean Elgar.
"Dean has been in our plans for some time and might well have made his debut last year but for injury" Andrew Hudson, CSA's selection convener, said in a statement.
Leg spinner Imran Tahir, who was impressive in the recently concluded first Test, also made a comeback to the ODI side after missing out on national duties post the World Cup in 2011. All-rounder Ryan McLaren, who last played an ODI in 2010, also returns to the side.
"Imran is a genuine wicket-taking bowler and his selection enables us to explore our options in this area. Ryan has just come off some exceptional form for the South Africa A side and the added depth he provides in the seam bowling department will allow us to rotate players if we feel the need arises."
The first of the 5 ODIs starts in Cardiff on August 24th. South Africa will then play three T20 internationals against England. The squad for that series will be named in mid August.
The squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
