Jonny Bairstow is determined to force his way back into England's Test squad after being left out for the series opener against South Africa.

The Yorkshire wicketkeeper-batsman appeared in all three matches against the West Indies earlier in the summer but was not picked in the squad to take on the Proteas at the Oval, Ravi Bopara instead getting the nod.

 

Instead, Bairstow will be in action for his county, "hungry" to perform well in domestic cricket and state his case for another crack at Test cricket.

 

He will also get the chance to don the gloves again for the Tykes, who travel to Derbyshire this week for a top-of-the-table clash in Division Two of the LV= County Championship.

 

"It's obviously disappointing not to be in that squad. But I haven't scored enough runs, so that's fair enough," Bairstow told Sky Sports News HD.

 

"I've come back down to Yorkshire really hungry to score runs, really hungry to get back out on the park and spend some time in the middle and get back keeping as well - that's something I've not necessarily done much of recently.

 

"I'm really excited to be back, keeping wicket and hopefully scoring some runs."

 

Bairstow had already impressed in limited-overs action for England before a stong start to the domestic season saw him vaulted into the Test XI. However he was unable to cement his spot at No.6, managing 38 runs in four innings.

 

Yet, despite not quite seizing his opportunity, the right-hander has promised there won't be any half measures in his bid to win back his place.

 

"It's obviously tough. I didn't necessarily score too many runs, but I only batted three times (he did get to the crease twice at Lord's, though the second time England needed only a further two runs for victory)," he added.

 

"It's tough to make that step but it's something I feel I am well capable of doing.

 

"That will only come if I keep working hard, with Goochie (Graham Gooch) and Andy (Flower) with England, and with Dizzy (Jason Gillespie), Farbs (Paul Farbrace) and Martyn Moxon with Yorkshire, then going out in the middle and creating performances that will warrant selection again.

 

"There won't be any half measures. I will be going into it whole-heartedly, to come back and really work hard on my game and hopefully get back in that squad."
