England vs Pakistan 2012 TEST Series

3rd TEST MATCH: Live Cricket Scorecard

England are in comparatively commanding position after bundling out Pakistan for a paltry 99 runs on Day 1 of the third Test in Dubai.

Wickets:

Over: 19.2: A Rehman to Pietersen

OUT! LBW!
Pitches on middle and goes straight on with the arm. Pietersen misses his forward defense and the ball hits his pads. The players go up in an appeal and Umpire Taufel raises his finger. Pietersen asks for a review but replays show that the ball is clipping the leg stump. The umpire's decision stays. Pietersen departs, he was looking ominous out there.

Over 4.2: Trott lbw Gul

OUT! Fullish delivery on middle, Trott goes for a flick but misses it completely. The ball hits his pads and the players go up in a huge appeal. The umpire lifts his finger. Trott doesn't ponder a review. Two down England now! Trott was unlucky there as replays show it would have missed the leg stump.

Over 2.2: Cook caught Akmal, bowled Gul

OUT!
Caught behind! Good length delivery outside off, nips away after landing. Cook fishes for it outside the off stump and gets an edge to Akmal who dives to his left and pouches a superb catch. Cook departs for 1!

Tea: England 19/2  (Pakistan 1st innings: 99 all out)

Stuart Broad and James Anderson hustled Pakistan out for 99, on a wicket-laden first day of the final Test at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Anderson (three for 35) struck in the first over, and there was no let-up from him and Broad (four for 36) after Misbah-ul-Haq had chosen to bat first.

But Pakistan, bowled out in mid-afternoon, hit back with two wickets for Umar Gul - as the new ball again proved lethal, on a pitch of decent pace and occasional variable bounce, and England stumbled to 19 for two at tea.

Only number six Asad Shafiq managed significant resistance as England, who began this dead rubber in danger of a 3-0 whitewash after back-to-back defeats, delivered a fierce payback for their previously sorry performances here.

Yet there was also an inevitable hollow note for the world number ones, who waved goodbye to this series with their own hapless collapse to 72 all out in Abu Dhabi last week. They could nonetheless do no more than go for the kill so effectively once they got started today.

Anderson began with the wicket of Taufeeq Umar, for a five-ball duck, in the first over with a delivery which straightened off the seam for lbw.

England could have had their second success only two balls later, Broad finding Mohammad Hafeez's edge only for Andrew Strauss to merely parry a sharp head-high catch at slip.

The opener therefore survived on one, and Broad had to wait until more movement took a faint inside edge to account for Azhar Ali after a fine catch by Matt Prior and a DRS review which overturned Simon Taufel's initial not-out verdict because of Hotspot evidence.

It got even better for Strauss' men when Younus Khan fenced at some extra bounce from Broad and also went caught-behind thanks to Prior - in the wicketkeeper's 50th Test.

England could do precious little wrong, and called another successful DRS to have Hafeez lbw to Broad even though the batsman appeared to think he had got bat on ball.

When Misbah himself went lbw at the other end - DRS proved no help to Pakistan against Anderson's full-length swing - Pakistan's scorecard already bore a remarkable resemblance to the ones England contrived in the first two Tests.

There were to be two more wickets before lunch for good measure.

Adnan Akmal would have been run out after a push to cover for an unwise single, had Eoin Morgan managed a direct hit. But the same batsman was soon deceived by Broad, in his second spell, for the 30th lbw dismissal of this uncanny series.

Monty Panesar bowled the first overs of spin, but it was Graeme Swann who broke the run of wickets falling to pace when Abdur Rehman had a swing at the off-spinner and managed only to hoist a gentle skier to Kevin Pietersen at mid-off.

Shafiq kept England at bay for 78 balls, and contributed almost half his team's runs. But he was the second of two more lbw departures, trying to cut a Panesar arm ball, before Pakistan fell just short of three figures.

Early indications, however, were that England might yet struggle to take a match-controlling first-innings lead.

Alastair Cook chased a wide ball, to be well-caught behind by a diving Akmal, and then Jonathan Trott fell in Gul's next over - lbw to a full-length delivery, and ignoring a DRS option only for Hawkeye to suggest the ball would have gone on to miss leg-stump.

England hope Tim Bresnan may be able to fly back to the United Arab Emirates soon, in time for the limited-overs leg of this tour, having had to return home before the first Test because of post-operative elbow pain.

But the seamer's travel plans and availability for one-day international and Twenty20 squads, due to be named after this Test, are still dependent on ongoing fitness checks in Yorkshire.

As it happened...

Over 44.1:
Gul b Anderson (13) Good length delivery outside off, nips back in. Gul goes for a wild slog and inside edges it onto his stumps.

Over 39.6:
Shafiq lbw b Panesar (45) Slightly back of a length delivery on middle, goes straight on. Shafiq goes for an audacious cut close to the body but misses in the first place. The ball hits his pads and then his bat. The players go up in an appeal and the umpire lifts his finger. Replays show that it would have hit the middle stump. Nine down now Pakistan, their last recognized batsman departs!

Over 35.3:
Ajmal lbw b Panesar (12) Fullish on leg stump, goes straight on after landing. Ajmal was playing for the spin and hence misses. The ball hits his front pad and the players go up in an appeal. The umpire is convinced and lifts his finger straightaway. Fifth LBW dismissal in this innings.

Over 21.2: Rehman c Pietersen b Swann (1) Loopy delivery outside off, Rehman dances down the track for a hoick but gets an outside edge. The ball loops into the air to Pietersen at mid off who runs to his right and makes no mistake.

Over 18.6:
Akmal lbw b Broad (6) Fullish on off, nips back in after landing. Akmal goes for a defensive prod but misses. The ball hits his front pads and the players go up in an appeal. The umpire gives it out straightaway. Akmal goes for a review but it is turned down.

Double break in quick succession has cracked Pakistan's top half. The Anderson-Broad duo has sent Misbah and Hafeez back in the hut. Monty Panesar has been introduced.

Over 10.5:
Misbah lbw b Anderson (1) Fullish delivery on off, nips back in sharply, Misbah goes for an on drive but misses it. Gests hit on pads and is given out. Misbah appeals but replays show that the ball would have hit the leg stump.

Over 9.6:
Hafeez lbw b Broad (13) Pitches on good length on off, jags back in. Hafeez tries to defend but is hit on pads. Players appeal but umpire gives not out. England ask for review and it goes in their favour.

Pakistan are on the backfoot even before the Test has warmed up! Stuart Broad has picked up his second wicket to put England in complete command.

Over 7.5:
Younis c Prior b Broad (4) Good length delivery on off and nips away. Younus tries to poke at it but the bounce does him in. Gets an outside edge to the keeper.

Stuart Broad gave England their second breakthrough after Azhar Ali failed to make an impression.

Over 5.3:
Azhar c Prior b Broad (1) Pitches on a good length and nips back in sharply. Ali goes for a defense but seems to miss it as he is cut into half. The umpire refuses the England appeal but the third umpire reviews and reverses the decision.

England got on the money early on after Anderson sent Taufeeq Umar back in the hut.

Over 0.6: Taufeeq lbw b Anderson (0) Umar plays a half-hearted flick but misses. The ball hits his pads and the players go up in an appeal. The umpire lifts his finger.
